Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia is Australia's second largest airline. They currently offer an extensive flight network throughout Australia and, along with codeshare agreements with Etihad Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, and Delta Airlines, also offer an extensive global network.

Australia has very strict rules governing the admission of animals to the country. If you are planning to bring your pet with you, you should be advised that a mandatory quarantine period is strictly enforced to prevent the introduction of rabies, as well as other diseases and/or parasites. The quarantine period will depend on the country of origin. Cats and dogs travelling from Canada or the United States (excluding Hawaii) fall into the same category, and must complete a mandatory 180 day quarantine period. In some cases up to 150 days of the quarantine period may be served in the country of origin, with the remaining 30 days being served in Australia. Requirements will vary depending on the country of origin.

For complete information regarding bringing cats and dogs (and other pets) to Australia, please contact the Australian Government's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF). Here is a link to their website: Click Here. The website explicitly states that all dogs and cats must complete a minimum 30 day period in Australian quarantine. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Virgin Australia will only accept pets in the cargo hold of the aircraft. Certified service animals are the only exception to this rule-they may be permitted to travel in the passenger cabin, but only with prior approval and proper documentation. For domestic flights within Australia, animals are accepted as checked baggage. They are currently unable to accept bookings made directly by guests, and instead recommend that anyone wishing to travel with their pet should make arrangements though an approved International Pet and Animal Transport Association (IPATA) agent.

Restrictions

  • Travelers are reminded that every country has different rules and regulations governing the acceptance and transportation of animals. It is strongly recommended that you contact the consulate, embassy, or government authority for any country (or countries) you will be visiting to ensure that you have met all entrance requirements.
  • Space for pet travel is limited. Please call before you travel to confirm a space for your pet.
  • Virgin Australia reserves the right to refuse any animal that appears unhealthy or exhibits aggressive and potentially harmful behavior.
  • All carriers must comply with International Air Transport Association (IATA) standards and regulations.
  • Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry (DAFF) website explicitly states that "if an animal arrives in Australia and it does not meet all of the relevant import conditions, it may be exported to the country of origin or euthanized." If you will be travelling to Australia with your animal companion, please ensure that you have satisfied all the criteria for entry.

If you are unable to travel with your pet

Virgin Australia will only accept bookings for international pet travel through an approved International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA) agent. For any domestic travel arrangements in Australia, please contact the Virgin Australia Customer Service line for details.

Codeshare flights

Pets may not be accepted on flights operated by codeshare partners. It is strongly recommended that you contact any codeshare partners, or other airlines you may be travelling with, to familiarize yourself with their individual policies regarding pet travel.
