American Airlines

American Airlines is one of the largest and most established airlines in the United States. They are also a founding member of the oneworld® alliance, which has brought together 12 of the world's leading airlines and around 30 affiliate airlines.

Currently, American Airlines will accept only cats and dogs for in-cabin travel and as checked baggage. For any other type of pet, it is recommended that you contact American Airlines Cargo. Pets travelling in-cabin are accepted on a first-come basis and a reservation is required, as space is limited. Checked pets do not require a reservation.

The maximum number of pet carriers on any given flight is seven (for those flights accepting pets).

Pet carriers are limited to one per ticketed passenger and will count as either a carry-on bag or a personal item.

  • For international flights, American Airlines strongly recommends contacting the consulate, embassy, or government authorities for any country (or countries) you will be visiting to ensure that you have met all entrance requirements. Travelers are advised to familiarize themselves with any regional laws and restrictions that may apply.
  • Restrictions related to extreme weather conditions apply to certain flights depending on the time of year, the point of destination, and/or the point of departure. Seasonal holiday restrictions may also apply.
  • American Airlines does not accept certain "snub-nosed" (or brachycephalic) breeds of cats and dogs as checked baggage. A list of breeds that fall into this category can be found on the company's website.
  • When travelling with pets a valid health certificate must be presented upon request.

If you are unable to travel with your pet

American Airlines Cargo offers two options when shipping live animals: Priority Parcel Service and Expeditefs.

  • Priority Parcel Service is most often used for shipping animals within the continental United States, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. There is a maximum weight allowance of 100 lbs (combined weight of animal and carrier).
  • Expeditefs is generally used for international transport or for animals that exceed the weight or container specifications of Priority Parcel Service.

They comply with all U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations and they offer shipping options for a wide range of warm-blooded and cold-blooded animals.

Shipping rates will vary depending on the points of origin and destination, the type of animal being shipped, and the dimensions and/or weight of the carrier.

Codeshare flights

Pets may not be accepted on flights operated by codeshare and interline partners. American Airlines strongly suggests contacting any codeshare partners or other oneworld® Alliance partners (or affiliate airlines) directly to familiarize yourself with their individual policies regarding pet travel.
